GMIC 2010 – Will Attempt Some Quick Blogging Updates

May 26, 2010

in Mobile Internet

I‘ll be attending the Global Mobile Internet Conference 2010 for the next two days and I’ll attempt to give some quick updates throughout the day with sessions that I attend.

Morodo will be presenting to a small panel of judges/investors, and hopefully we’ll see us move into the final round of judging for the start-up competition.

I’ll also be providing some photo coverage for the event- so we’ll definitely see some pictures, but I really want to try to get some session coverage going. I think the hardest thing about covering sessions, is knowing what to highlight, and what to throw out. Everything is all so new to me still, so I think that everything is worth taking note on =).

Tonight was the intro dinner for the conference, and we had the privilege of hearing from then panel: Kaiser Kuo of Youku.com, Richard Robinson of Kooky Panda, Alvin Wang of mInfo, David Wolf of Wolf Group Asia, and Victor Tong of Webplus, moderated by Jeremy Goldkorn of Danwei.org.

It’s amazing to see some of these people in person, and personally for me, to see Jeremy Goldkorn in person as I read his blog daily on the Chinese media space- and aptly put by Jeremy as the session started, it would probably cost an arm and a leg to get an hour of consulting from either of these panelists, so it’s amazing to get hear their thoughts on the night’s session on ‘doing business in China’s mobile internet market’.

Two of the two summary takeaways that they shared for foreign entrepreneurs in China were:

- You’re going to get screwed over at least one time when you start in China. Accept it and move on- after you do so, you’ll finally be able to begin making progress.

- Find a local partner to help you learn the market. You’ll most likely get screwed over by them later on, but it’s bound to happen anyways so it sort of accelerates the process a bit.

Well it’s late and I better get some rest for the two days ahead of me.

Next update will be from the conference.
(edit: well, it turned out that the internet connection at GMIC was horrendously slow in the morning, and I couldn’t log in to WordPress. An update will be coming soon.)
