Beijing Spring and Sandstorms – It’s a Package Deal

March 21, 2010

in Journal

This post is pretty much part-two of the previous post about the air pollution in Beijing; I’d actually taken more pictures while I was walking through the sand-storm, but forgot to download them off my phone; whoops!

I was speaking with my Chinese teacher at 1on1 Mandarin about the recent sandstorm, and she was telling me that the coming of strong winds (and sandstorms) is a sign that the spring is moving in. It’s not quite the spring that I was looking forward to in my anticipation of the warmer weather moving in- we never had the concern of sandstorms with the coming of spring back in Illinois; although we did have the joy of looking forward to the ‘fresh morning air’ blowing up from the south farms as farmers would begin to fertilize their crops, yum.

Anyhow- enough randomness from me, here are the pics. Again, if you’re wondering what dust mask I have, it’s a Techno mask by Respro.

Duncan, loving your pics! But sorry about the sandstorms. I am not sure why, but it really surprised me to learn about this. How long will it last, do you think?

PS Thanks for the camera tips! I currently employ shooting in the rain trick #3 (hiding camera in rain coat, whipping it out to take a quick shot). Love the excuse, er, idea of #1, though. Next camera…

Hi Japra,

Apparently we'll be having more sandstorms due to the long-dry winter, so the top soil is all dry and loose; fun = Though I guess I'll be getting some good mileage out of my mask now =)

Regarding the camera tip of hiding it in your rain coat- the only downside, that I forgot to warn you about, is that if you're walking into a store or bank, security might think that you're packing some heat. Not speaking from experience (yet.. hehe) but it's definitely a concern when I walk past security looking like I'm concealing something in my jacket!
