The Last Hero – 剩斗士

The Holy WarriorDuring lunch breaks, I grab lunch with my project manager, and a group of developers on my team, and they love teaching me random Chinese phrases. Somehow the conversation was about dating and marriage, and it turns out that I’m the only one on my team that isn’t dating or married. They were pretty surprised about this and started to pressure me to start looking, otherwise before I know it, I’d be a 剩斗士 (‘sheng4 dou4 shi4′ is literally translated as, ‘the last hero’), which is a term that locals use for men who are over 30 and are still unmarried.

For those who didn’t grow up in Asia, there’s a cartoon called 圣斗士 (also read as ‘sheng4 dou4 shi4′, which is translated as ‘the holy warrior’). I thought it was the most hilarious term ever; and I guess it puts a pretty ‘romantic/chivalrous’ title to those who are still ‘in the battlefield of singlehood’, as ‘the last warrior’ or ‘the holy warrior’; haha.

I guess I better start looking for my 北京美女 (Beijing pretty girl).
